Cannabis Coalition Press Release
Feb 24 1999.
1. Bill to re-legalise medical cannabis, House of Commons Wednesday February 24th 3.30pm.
2. Grandfather, 55, jailed for 12 months in Swansea yesterday (Feb 23,1999) for using cannabis for Rheumatoid Arthritis.
3. Worldwide cannabis action on Mayday (Saturday May 1st 1999) includes London 'Celebration of Cannabis' march and festival.A spokesperson for the International Cannabis Coalition (ICC) said:
"Why should treating yourself successfully for a serious medical condition, using a natural herb which you have grown yourself, costing the National Health absolutely nothing and harming no one, deserve one second in jail, much less a year".
"We need to completely end the prohibition of cannabis as a matter of urgency - for the protection and benefit of everyone's physical and social health".
"The prohibition of cannabis is a threat to Britain's national health and social well being. The prohibition of personal cannabis use should be ended and an amnesty declared for all those prosecuted under the current unjust laws".
"This is why on May 1st 1999 people in Britain, and all over the world will be demanding the urgent end to cannabis prohibition worldwide".
Back ground notes: Opinion polls in the last few years show consistently that well over 60% of the general public in Britain support the end of prohibition. Meanwhile the scientific evidence supporting it's medical and industrial value is now insurmountable, with even the House of Lords supporting medical use. There are also serious human rights, ethical and practical issues involved in the prohibition for recreational use of a Herb which has few proven harmful effects if used in moderation.
Prohibition of cannabis is highly dangerous and damaging in a number of ways - we have only to look at the corruption recently exposed in the police force to see that. If an M.P. uses cannabis he or she could be blackmailed. Prohibition causes gangsterism, it denies any kind of quality control of a product used by millions, and it leads to abuse though ignorance. Prohibition of cannabis is contributing to the spread of heroin addiction in Britain and worldwide.
In the United States people are serving 25 year sentences and more just for a few plants. In Britain 900 people a year are given prison sentences and 25,000 are prosecuted. Many more are cautioned by the police, persecuted at work and live in fear just because they want to enjoy a simple and honest pleasure, which can be healing in itself, or because they need to use it as a medicine which works better than any other known treatment.
