Cannabis 2000

A London march, festival and all night event as part of a Cannabis Action Day worldwide on Saturday May 6th 2000.

Aims - 1. Unify peaceful protest at the continued prohibition of cannabis and celebrate it's contribution to our culture in Britain as part of a simultaneous worldwide event on Saturday May 6th 2000 (65 cities, in over 20 countries confirmed so far). 2. Represent the interests of cannabis users and establish a 'New Deal for Cannabis'.

Strategy - to organise an 'end the cannabis prohibition' march, festival and all night event in London in full co-operation with all local authorities, with similar events in other parts of the country as part of a worldwide day of action. It is essential that all events be legal, safe, efficiently organised, and peaceful. The largest possible turnout is required for the march. Cannabis is already an election issue in the mayoral elections; we will support all those with sensible policies.

Organisation - organising groups exist for the following - Policy, March, Festival, After Party, Publicity, Funding.

Policy - Our target is the end of cannabis prohibition for all purposes ie recreational, medical and industrial. See the 'New Deal for Cannabis.

Cannabis users also need to defend themselves from those who would set the clock back and bring in greater repression. Only by showing that we are organised, strong and determined can we prevent any chance of that.

We must also 'seal the borders' against the flood of dangerous American Drug Policies which corrupt politicians and society alike - the recent action against the US Drug Tsar showed how successful this opposition can be - he ran away!

A typical US import is the spread of drug testing in the work place and in schools which is especially unfair on cannabis smokers and an assault on everyone's human rights. In prisons drug testing still encourages cannabis smokers to take heroin. We can win any discussion about this. The only 100% safe drug test is one that tests for purity to protect the consumer.

The issue of medical cannabis is undoubtedly the area which most exposes the cruel irrationality of cannabis prohibition and where there is the widest public support for urgent change. Everyone has a vested interest in changing the law on medical use now; if it is not you it could be a friend or relative who is either denied treatment or imprisoned for using it. No civilised society knowingly denies available treatment to the sick. The voting public knows this situation is indefensible.

Support for an end to the prohibition of cannabis comes from all walks of life. Almost everyone in the country now agrees; prohibition simply does not work - not even for prohibitionists! We can work this out. Thank you for any support you can give.
